La Paz
Farmers
Markets
La Paz, Bolivia
Joseph marvels at the abundance of colorful produce at one of La Paz’s many markets. While this market spreads out for blocks, it’s just one of the many markets that can be found in the bustling city of La Paz. Joseph checks out the fresh vegetables and flowers that can be found here, and he meets a few of the vibrant vendors who fill the market streets.
Mi Teleférico
La Paz, Bolivia
Joseph discovers that La Paz, the high altitude capital, is home to a stunning collection of 10 lines of cable cars that join the city with the adjacent El Alto. It’s the longest aerial cable car system in the world, providing a respite from road traffic below. Joseph takes a ride in one of the cars, and takes in vistas of the surrounding Andean mountains.
La Paz Cementerio General
La Paz, Bolivia
Roughly a thousand bright murals cover the sides of the cemetery, where people can rent a space to dedicate to a loved ones remains. Joseph explores how the murals pay homage to cultural and religious themes in Bolivian culture.
Lake Titicaca
Chuquiñapi, Bolivia
Like La Paz, Lake Titicaca can be found in the heights of the Andean mountains, covering the border between Bolivia and Peru. Joseph sails on the deep blue waters of the highest altitude lake in the world. He stops at the village of Chuquiñapi, and walks to the Isla Sonata, basking in the view of the sun setting against the water.
La Isla
de la Luna
Lake Titicaca, Bolivia
Joseph sets sail for La Isla de la Luna, one of the islands found on the freshwater lake, and wonders at its mysterious history. A site that was significant for Incan and pre-Incan civilizations, Joseph walks the ruins of an ancient temple and learns about ceremonial sacrifices once conducted there.
Uyuni Salt Flats
Joseph ventures out to the otherworldly Uyuni Salt Flats, formed after a prehistoric lake dried and left salt deposits that extend for almost 5,000 square miles. Joseph cruises through the landscape with the best seat in the house: sitting on top of a trusty four-wheel drive. He pauses to examine the iconic geometric patterns, formed in the salt by evaporation and area winds.
Bolivia
Tunupa
Volcano
La Plata, Bolivia
Joseph treks over 15,000 feet up into the Andean Plateau, and shares a surreal moment in view of the Tunupa Volcano, a sacred mountain. He stands breathless by some of the rock formations created in homage by Bolivians of Pachamama, the Indigenous goddess of the earth.
